Dental Hygiene
Maintaining good oral health prevents not just tooth decay, but also gum disease, staining and bad breath (halitosis). It goes beyond brushing your teeth twice a day. This is one of the most important services we believe we offer our patients that in the long term prevents the need for future treatments.

What is Dental Hygiene?
Your gums are the foundation of your teeth and are vital to their health, stability and longevity. Teeth will gradually build-up plaque and calculus over time. This plaque and calculus build-up can cause the following problems:
- Bad breath
- Gum disease
- Gum recession
- Tooth decay
- Unsightly appearance
- Bad taste
Once plaque hardens on the teeth and becomes calculus it isn’t possible to brush it off and you need a professional clean. Our dental therapists provide you with valuable advice on how to take care of your teeth and gums. We can teach you how to brush correctly and help you prevent gum disease.

The Benefits Of Regular Dental Hygiene Treatments
- Prevents Cavities and Tooth Decay
- Reduces Risk of Gum Disease
- Eliminates Bad Breath

What Happens At A Hygiene Appointment?
At your appointment, we’ll thoroughly assess your teeth, gums and surrounding soft tissue. We’ll primarily look for signs of gum disease, plaque build-up, decay and other symptoms that suggest further treatment is required.
We’ll discuss our findings with you and talk you through which treatments could benefit you the most. We might perform some treatments during your appointment, or we might book you to see a dentist.
As standard, we provide our patients with a scale and polish to break away plaque and tartar build-up to prevent gum disease and decay in the future. Once the appointment is over, you’ll leave our clinic with the ultimate, beyond fresh feeling.

Initial Assessment
Your visit begins with an oral health check. The hygienist will examine your teeth and gums for signs of plaque buildup, gum inflammation, bleeding, or other oral health concerns. They may also ask about your brushing habits, diet, and general health.

Plaque and Tartar Removal
Using special instruments, the hygienist will remove soft plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from your teeth—especially around the gumline and between teeth—where your toothbrush may not reach. This helps prevent gum disease and tooth decay.

Polishing & Fluoride Application
After scaling, your teeth are polished using a rotating brush and a special paste. Polishing smooths the surfaces of your teeth, helping to remove surface stains and leaving your mouth feeling fresh and clean. A fluoride gel or varnish may be applied to strengthen your enamel and protect against cavities, especially if you're at higher risk of decay.
Why Is Gum Health Important?
- Prevents Gingivitis: Plaque build-up causes inflammation, leading to early-stage gum disease (gingivitis).
- Avoids Periodontitis: If untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, where gums pull away from teeth, forming bacteria-filled pockets.
- Maintains Overall Health: Healthy gums lower the risk of serious conditions like heart disease and diabetes.
A dental hygienist focuses on preventing and treating gum diseases by:
- Removing plaque and tartar that brushing alone cannot clean.
- Offering gum treatments like scaling and polishing for deeper cleaning.
- Providing personalised advice for oral hygiene and gum care.

The Symptoms Of Gum Disease
Which Symptoms To Look Out For
The chances are that at some point in your adult life, you’ve noticed one or more of these symptoms while you brush your teeth or eat something very hot or cold. They’re incredibly common symptoms and because they’re common, they’re often overlooked or not taken seriously. If you experience any of the following:
- Sensitive gums when brushing, drinking, or eating
- Inflamed, swollen, red, or puffy gums
- Gums that are receding from the bottom of your teeth
- Loose teeth because of these receding gums
- Bleeding when brushing or eating something coarse
If you find yourself experiencing any of the above symptoms, please book to see one of our dental hygienists:

Routine treatments are usually not painful. We aim for all our procedures to be pain-free as possible.
