Benefits Of Teeth Whitening

The Teeth Whitening Process

4 Simple Steps To A Bright White Smile.

Consultation & Assessment

At Dental Icon your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to ensure whitening is safe for you. They may clean your teeth beforehand. This process will be the same for both in-chair and take-home whitening treatments.

Apply The Whitening Agent

A whitening gel containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide is applied to the teeth.

In-chair: A stronger formula may be used, often activated by a special light or laser.

At-home kits: You can apply the gel using custom trays that are designed to fit your teeth perfectly, you can then proceed to whiten your teeth in your own time in the comfort of your home.

Activation and Waiting Period

The whitening gel breaks down stains on the enamel during this stage.

Treatment time varies from 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the method and product strength. We recommend performing this process regularly for 2 - 3 weeks to achieve the desired effect.

Rinsing and Aftercare

After whitening, the gel is rinsed off, and the dentist may apply a fluoride treatment to reduce sensitivity.

You're advised to avoid stain-causing foods/drinks (coffee, wine, tobacco) for at least 24–48 hours.

In-Chair Teeth Whitening

In-chair whitening treatment usually produces rapid results, which means that you can enjoy a transformation very quickly, often in just one hour. Treatment usually involves applying bleaching agent to the teeth and then shining a light onto the teeth to activate it; the process is very simple and easy and you don’t feel any pain.

The Process Of In-Chair Teeth Whitening Involves

  1. Anaesthetic is applied to the upper and lower front teeth
  2. A protective resin is placed in your mouth to prevent irritation to your gums and other soft tissues.
  3. Your dentist then carefully applies the whitening gel to the surfaces of your teeth
  4. The formula is activated with LED light 3-4 times for 10-15 minutes each round

Additionally, we recommend regular check-ups and hygiene appointments to ensure optimal oral health. Our clinic is equipped with specialised tools designed specifically for maintaining whitened teeth. Regular professional cleanings can help prevent staining and keep your smile looking its best.

Maintaining good oral hygiene at home, such as regular brushing and flossing, along with avoiding staining substances like coffee, tea, and red wine, will also contribute to the lasting effects of your teeth whitening treatment.

Yes! Professional whitening is safe when done correctly. Overuse of whitening products can cause sensitivity or gum irritation.

Whitening products do not work on fillings, crowns, or veneers. Your dentist can recommend other options.

Sensitivity is a normal part of the professional teeth whitening process as during the first few days of teeth whitening the stains within the tooth are broken down, making the tooth a little more exposed than normal. This quickly dies down after the first few days of teeth whitening and the sensitivity subsides.
